Clever living room ideas that maximise your space

August 2024

Our living rooms are the place where we relax and unwind and entertain family and friends.  Whilst a comfy sofa is at the heart of the room, there are so many other ideas that can help make your living room look and feel personal and special to you.

Clever storage

Clutter can make a space look smaller, so storage is key.  Clever storage that keeps clutter hidden gives you the opportunity to display special pieces that instantly elevate the space.  Consider shelving - a tall bookshelf can take a lot of clutter away and you can add a plant or two, in addition to books, photos and other decorative items.

Paint inside shelving to add interest – it’s easy and budget friendly.  Alternate colours to add an extra design element.

Another idea is to use a single run of matching units across a wall.  They don’t have to be expensive and finding second hand units and then painting them a colour of your choice is a good option.

Add a large rug

We always use a large rug when styling our show flats.  A rug helps define different areas, adds warmth and texture and it can create the illusion of making the space look larger.  We recommend a light colour with a subtle pattern.

Layer your lighting

Ambient light makes a space feel cosy and warm. A combination of floor and table lamps with low wattage bulbs enables you to create a welcoming and relaxed space.

Artwork and mirrors

Artwork really helps elevate a space and don’t forget the frame is just as important.  Adding a white mount inside a frame can make a print stand out. A cost-effective option is to find a second-hand picture frame and paint it in a colour of your choice.  With so many paint options on the market it’s really easy to transform a frame.

Mirrors are also perfect for making a space feel bigger and lighter.  They come in all shapes and sizes, which helps to personalise your home.

Cushions and throws

There are no rules when it comes to sofa cushions, but size matters - too small for your sofa and they can look out of place and too large they can take over!

Mix and match shapes and designs, clash prints with patterns and use cushions as a way to add something extra and express your personal style.

We love a throw, they aren't just decorative, they add texture to a room, keep you warm and can make a seating area feel extra cosy.

Throws can change the look of your sofa in an instant, so if you're bored of your sofa's plain look, cover it with a patterned design. Just like cushions, clashing textures and colours is anyone's game, so go for whatever works for you – be it a plush throw on a neutral-coloured sofa, or add more personality with a brightly-coloured patterned throw. And don't forget about sheepskin rugs and faux fur designs, which look as good draped over the back of your sofa as they do on the floor.
